Hanmer Springs Ski Area

Hanmer Springs Ski Area, formerly known as Amuri, is a small club ski area with a ton of personality and terrain suitable for all abilities. A fun, affordable, grassroots experience where the focus is on who you're with and not how hot your gear is. Self-catered day lodge and awesome on-mountain accommodation.

About Hanmer Springs

Hanmer Springs Ski Field is 17km from Hanmer Springs, 155km from Christchurch and 155km from Kaikoura.

A long poma lift and a rope tow accesses wide-open runs, both groomed and ungroomed. Beginners are well catered to and then can easily take the next steps to riding the longer lifts. If you're travelling or new to the sport they have on mountain gear rental and lessons for all abilities.

A cosy on mountain lodge provides the perfect spot for lunch if it's too cold to sit on the sunny deck overlooking the slopes. The ski area is only a 17km drive on a well maintained gravel road from Hanmer Springs. Remember your togs for a relaxing soak in the hot pools on the way home.

Terrain and Weather Tip

Situated on a north/north-east facing basin means the mountain receives plenty of sunshine. There are also south-east aspects so it can receive snow from many directions. Traditionally the best snowfall is received from south-east fronts. If you are equipped and proficient in side country exploration there are longer runs either side of the mountain that lead back to the road and either a short walk up or hitching spot low down.

Check List

For everyone: Enjoy a barbeque on the deck.
For rope tow newbies: Make it to the top: Hanmer is a great place to learn to ride rope tows.
For the weekend: Ski all day then soak in the world famous village thermal pools in the evening.

Chill Tip

Stay the night in Robinson Lodge and wake up to views of the snow clad Inland Kaikoura Range.
