Avalanche Skills Course 1
ASC1 (formally Snow Safety Course) with intensive hands-on avalanche awareness, designed to improve your backcountry skills when venturing beyond the ski area boundaries.
2-Day course with Anna Keeling Guiding
Chill is proud to offer intensive hands-on avalanche awareness courses. They are specifically designed to improve the skills of skiers and riders who may be venturing into the backcountry from any of the South Island’s ski fields.
An introduction to the avalanche phenomenon and companion rescue techniques. The interplay of weather, snowpack and terrain plus decision making in the face of tempting powder, is the focus of the weekend.
Day 1: Learn to use transceivers and effect a rescue, using the MSC Avalanche Forecast Advisory and techniques for evaluating the stability of the snowpack.
Day 2: Travel through and learn about avalanche terrain on a day tour.
Given good snow conditions the course accesses the lift for one ride. This requires a one lift access pass (approx $10-$25) or use of your Chill Pass. If the course is limited to ski area boundaries due to weather conditions and the lift is used more than once a lift ticket is required. Skiers and riders should be of an intermediate standard and able to ski off-piste blue runs in a variety of snow conditions.
This covers the course cost only and not transport, accommodation or gear hire. Please indicate on your registration if you would like us to organise these on your behalf and we will contact you with more information. Back country equipment (skins, bindings with releasable heels, split boards or snow shoes) are required.
