Northland
Steeped in history, subtropical Northland (also known as the Far North), includes the Kauri Coast, Hokianga, Bay of Islands, and Whangarei, which has two MTB Parks. You’re never far from the sea, and panoramic sights such as Kaipara Harbour. The collection of mountain bike trails in the Region is gathering momentum.

Local Trails - Northland
Whanui Coach Road
The Whanui Coach Road runs from Mangahua Road through to Waiparera Road, Parua Bay. Its approx. 4.5 kms one way. You can also extend this ride through the Mackeral forest following Te Araroa Trail to Ngunguru Ford Road. The start is on Mangahua Road at the steel gate, the Coach Road starts on left.
Waipoka Coach Road
The trail starts at the end of the gravel on Waipoka Coach Road and continues to Old Kaiatea Road for approximately 4kms. Turn around and retrace the journey. This can also be done as a 25km loop from Ngunguru, continuing down Toiroa Road, a clay 4WD track back to Ngunguru. Enjoy the local beach Café, post ride.
Sandy Bay - Whananaki
Approx 7.5km.each way. Shared use track following the spectacular Northland coastline.
Parihaka Mountain Bike Park
The Bike Park is a recent development close to the city and is managed by Whangarei District Council & Whangarei Mountain Bike Club. The club is actively extending the trail network and carries out continual maintenance of the park, which has regenerating native forest. Gloves are essential. There are a range of trails suitable for beginners to expert riders. They are a mixture of clay base and gravelled surfaces. Location is off Abbey Caves Road, Whareora.
Glenbervie Mountain Bike Park
Glenbervie offers a range of old school trails & forestry roads through Pine forest for varying skill levels. Currently has large amounts of logging but many trails are still open. Riding from Glenbervie to Ngunguru is approximately 35km of gravel forestry road to the Coast. You can contact the Club to hook up with a guide as the Forest is huge. Location for start of trails is off Maruata Rd, Whangarei.
Kaipara Missing Link
A 2 to 3 day, Grade 3 ride is taking you through rolling farmland along the coast to Kaipara and NZ’s largest inland harbour travelling into the centre of Auckland. Starting from Dargaville onto Pouto Road toward Te Kopuru, riders can either go directly to Poutu Point or turn right onto West Coast Road to continue travel all the way down the beach. There is a 2.5hrs window either side of low tide. Next up a Ferry Trip followed by 53kms of riding waits and is leading to Massey, West AK. Grab a bus from here!
Kauri Coast Cycleway
A 1 to 2 day, Grade 3 ride is offering more stunning coast views and a visit to the holiday towns Oponini and Omapere at the entrance of the Hokianga Harbour. The track starts at Rawena and ends in Dargaville. Riding past the giant lords of the Waipoua Kauri Forest and across the rural farmscape of Dargaville to Kaipara Harbour.
Far North Cycle Trail
A 2 day, Grade 3 cycle trail starting from the lighthouse at Cape Reinga. Head south on Highway 1 for 15.6kms, turn southwest via Te Paki Stream and onto Ninety Mile Beach and enjoy a quiet beach ride through to Ahipara (5-8hrs). Travel on Foreshore Road east and then on Roma Road into the country. Departing from Ahipara the next town is Broadwood (35kms) then 30km to Rawene via Kohukohu including a 2kms ferry trip. Riding 50% solid sand and 50% sealed road means checking tide times and cleaning bikes.
