CHILL Avalanche Awareness Course

CHILL is proud to offer intensive hands-on avalanche awareness courses. They are specifically designed to improve the skills of skiers and riders who may be venturing into the backcountry from any of the South Island’s ski fields.

The course tutor is Shane Orchard who has run a number of avalanche courses both in Canada and New Zealand. He is qualified as an alpine instructor with the NZ Outdoor Instructors Association and a registered avalanche instructor with Mountain Safety Council.

Course programme
-Understanding the basics of avalanche formation and release
-Identification of avalanche terrain
-Basic route finding and decision making
-Use of appropriate travel techniques in avalanche terrain
-Equipment selection and use of transceivers and other equipment
-Companion rescue

There are 7 places on each course which can be secured, please complete the registration below and we will contact you to confirm availability and arrange payment of the course fee.  Note, by completing the enrolment form and making payment of the course fee ($95 – One day course, $195 – Two day course). Please note that the course fee does not include a lift ticket which is required to access the designated mountain (CHILL Pass Holders may use their pass).
